<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">
For those who knew the late <em style="outline: none !important;">Aro</em> of Mopa and former principal private secretary to the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the <em style="outline: none !important;">Sardauna</em> of Sokoto, Chief Sunday B. Awoniyi - while he was alive,was a journalist delight: every responsible and responsive journalist wanted to engage him. If you are a journalist working for a weekly or periodic magazine, who depends on anecdote leads to tell good stories, you would be luckier to engage Awoniyi in a discussion on any issue – be it politics, economy or religious.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">
Extremely intelligent with enormous knowledge about anything under the sun, the late former super permanent secretary would take you through stories about one amazing event or the other while his public service lasted. And trust a good magazine journalist: he would always find the content of Awoniyi’ stories very useful, especially in a kind of news story that requires a combination of explanatory and exploratory writings. And I was one of the benefactors of his wealth of experience.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">
By his conduct and action, the former chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), detested dishonest politicians; he was very hostile to abuse of power by politicians especially by those who played God. From my experiences with him, Chief Awoniyi was not a friend to selfish politicians who derive joy in seeing the poor suffer. The good man died on November 28, 2007 as a result of injuries he sustained from an auto crash along the Abuja-Kaduna road while trying to negotiate many potholes along the expressway.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">
As a journalist with TheNews/Tempo magazines then, late Awoniyi was one of my reliable and trusted sources of information. He was ever ready to confide in me on many national issues, especially in those days of the numerous wicked and evil political and economic policies of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s regime which brought severe pains and hardship to longsuffering Nigerians.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">
In one of his many factual stories, which I eventually confirmed from other credible sources, Chief Awoniyi, a former super permanent secretary, told me how Obasanjo begged him in 1975 to help save his military career during the regime of a no-nonsense former head of state, late General Murtala Muhammed. What was Obasanjo’s problem? One of his many estranged wives had petitioned Gen. Muhammed, detailing how Obasanjo misused his power as the then military officer to the detriment of the army. The anti-corruption crusader general, Muhammed who later investigated the petition, found Obasanjo’s offence unpardonable and was ready to dismiss him from the military. An embattled Obasanjo was later advised to solicit the help of Muhammed’s senior prefect at Barewa College, Zaria, Chief Awoniyi, to save his career. He did quite that. A day after Obasanjo approached him for the help he (Awoniyi) was in Dodan Barracks, Lagos – the then seat of power as early as 7am. “At exactly 7:30am, General Muhammed walked into his office and met me waiting for him. He was shocked to see me that early morning; he knew something very important brought me there. And he (Muhammed) said senior, what are you doing in my office this morning? Before I could reply him he ushered me into his office”, Awoniyi had stated.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">
The then permanent secretary eventually told his boss, Gen. Muhammed, his mission. According to Awoniyi, the late head of state brought out from his drawer a petition written by Obasanjo’s wife, which he said had been investigated to be true and gave it to him to read. It was very dirty. But in spite of that, the late Aro of Mopa pleaded with Gen. Muhammed to give Obasanjo a second chance. To cut the long story short, the late head of state, after much plea, acceded to Awoniyi’s request and asked him to tell Obasanjo to sin no more.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">
Guess what happened? A few months later, General Muhammed was assassinated in a controversial violent military coup led by Col. Dimka and Obasanjo was persuaded “against his will” to succeed him. Sadly, the first person Obasanjo forced to retire from the federal civil service was the man who saved him from being dismissed from the military, Chief Awoniyi. Heartless man, you may say. Yes.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">
For those who don’t know, many cases abound - which point to the notorious fact that Obasanjo derives joy from destroying his friends. From the south-west geo-political zone, I am very sure the families of assassinated Chief Bola Ige, late Sunday Afolabi, an Owo high chief, Chief Fasawe, Chief Bode Geoge and others, have similar sad stories to tell about Obasanjo’s iniquity. Ask his former deputy, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who Obasanjo is and he will also surely advise you to kill Obasanjo first before a sapient if both mistakenly approach your room at the same time. It was an Atiku-led political structure, the PDM, which brought Obasanjo to power against the popular rejection by his Yoruba people; but no sooner than Obasanjo came to power in 1999 than he destroyed Atiku and his political structure. The sins of the Ogun State born former president are many. Obasanjo knew the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was suffering from a terminal ailment and may not be able to finish his tenure but he chose to impose him on the nation against the will of the entire north and Nigerians in general, eventually making way for President Goodluck Jonathan to come to power.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">
Today, we are also being told that the same Obasanjo wants Jonathan out of power by all means necessary for whatever reasons. We are being told he wants power to return to the North in 2015. Already, some naive politicians, especially some of the northern governors with presidential ambition are falling over one another for Obasanjo’s messianic toga. I pity them. It appears most of them have not learnt their lessons. Otherwise, they would have known that the greatest enemy of the north and south west today is Obasanjo. He has severally betrayed them in the past and there are no signs that he has turned a new leaf. The ongoing talk about Obasanjo wanting power to return to the north is all nonsense. In Nigeria today, whoever Obasanjo endorses is doomed politically. I have no problem with the north struggling for power at the federal level in 2015, but they will live to regret it if they rely on Obasanjo to help them achieve that political goal. I am persuaded by many people’s assertion that Obasanjo’s problems with Jonathan today have nothing to do with the perceived president’s inability to fix the insecurity and economic challenges in the country. No. It is all about selfish economic and political interests. The former president wanted to continue to be president emeritus, in spite of the fact that he is no longer in power while Jonathan and his team appear not to be ready for that.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">
From all indications, the 2015 general elections would shape and decide many things in our country; many right-thinking people would be involved in taking that decision but one person who would not be relevant is Emperor Obasanjo.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #0c0c0c; font-family: Baskerville, Georgia, Palatino, 'Palatino Linotype', 'Book Antiqua', 'URW Palladio L', serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21.450000762939453px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; outline: none !important; padding: 0px;">

<div class="entry" style="background-color: white; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“<em>Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. When you are seeking to bring big plans to fruition, it is important with whom you regularly associate. Hang out with friends who are like-minded and who are also designing purpose-filled lives. Similarly, be that kind of a friend for your friends.” </em><strong>- Mark Twain</strong>.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I love this quote! I stumbled across it a little while ago when I was looking for inspirational quotes, and it absolutely hit the nail on the head.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Can you remember the last time you were telling a friend or family member or even your partner about a dream, a goal you really wanted to achieve? It was probably something you were quite passionate about and talking about it with someone close to you. It got you in high spirits because you could already SEE IT. You could picture yourself opening the door to your new restaurant, salon, clothing store, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The person you are talking to responds to what you’ve said, and your energy changes. You are not so excited any more… the vision you had of opening the door to your brand new establishment seems to fade and disappear. Your spirit now feels low, and that disappointed feeling seeps in and your self esteem drops. If this sounds familiar, know you are not alone. We all have encounters with <strong>Dream Killers</strong>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<em>Dream Killers</em> aren’t necessarily bad people; neither are they haters. A Dream Killer could be that good friend/sister/brother/parent who has never really taken a risk on anything because they are terrified of failure. So naturally when you share your thoughts of starting your own business that would obviously involve taking a risk, they are quick to dissuade you with care. They might say things like ‘t<em>hat will never work in Nigeria</em>‘, ‘<em>I don’t think you can do it</em>‘, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I personally feel it’s important to seek advice from the right kind of people. I’ve been in the Nigerian entertainment industry for just 3 years, and for the first 18 months the rate at which my dreams were being shut-down was stupendous. I’d have an amazing idea, talk to a few people about this amazing idea and before the end of the day, I’d be so depressed because my idea had been stomped on and mortally crushed. It wasn’t like the people I would talk to didn’t want me to do well, far from it…they just couldn’t see my vision.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After a few more months of dream crushing, I decided that I had had enough. I thought about what I wanted to achieve career-wise, and researched people in and out of the industry that I admired. I had role models in and out of Nigeria that I studied and when I got a chance to meet one or two in Nigeria, I must have tired them with my never-ending questions, but hey when it comes to chasing my dreams I’m like a rottweiler!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In my life I have encountered 2 types of Dream Killers – <em>the accidental Dream Killers</em> who care about you, but will unknowingly discourage you from chasing your dreams, and <em>the deliberate Dream Killers</em> who are basically unhappy in their own (most likely) unsuccessful lives, and really don’t want to see you progress.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I’ve learnt that on the journey to achieving your dreams (and greatness) you need to possess the following tools (excuse the pun):</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1) <strong>Prayer</strong> – Pray, pray and don’t stop praying.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2) <strong>Self belief</strong> – This is not to be confused with cockiness; just that belief that you deserve to be happy. The belief that you are worthy of success, and that you deserve to accomplish great things IF you put in the work.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3) Have some <strong>amazing passengers</strong> – Surround yourself with the right kind of people. The kind of people that believe in you and will be honest with you. They will constantly push you to aim for your best. Do not confuse these people with ‘yes-men’ – in fact BEWARE of people that think every single thing you do is amazing. (I may have to write about the dangers of yes-men later)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4) Be prepared to <strong>work hard</strong> – Nothing in this world worth having comes easy. Don’t expect to achieve anything worthwhile if you are afraid of hard work. My father taught me that. I have never thought I deserved anything just because… If I wanted a new anything I had to work for it; do overtime to earn the extra money or just wait till I could afford it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
5) Be <strong>tenacious</strong> – You will fail at certain things; accept that. However, knowing how to pick yourself up, figure out where you went wrong, re-group and try again is an amazing skill to possess. Think of the Richard Bransons and Oprahs, how many times do you think they failed before getting it right? As the late Aaliyah famously sang: <em>If at first you don’t succeed, d</em><em>ust yourself off and try again.</em></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
6) Be able to <strong>reflect</strong> – Take time out to think about and celebrate what you have achieved in your life, and likewise think about where you may have gone wrong or what you could have done better, and make adjustments where necessary.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
7) Be <strong>happy for the success of others</strong> – Honestly this one isn’t always easy. You can choose to be envious of other people’s success or you can learn from their success. You can let their journey inspire you to be more disciplined in your own.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are probably loads of other steps I could add to this list, but these are the ones that I’m currently doing my best to incorporate into my journey. Please feel free to add any useful ones below, because we’re all here to learn.</div>
</div>

For the records, I was the Lagos Liaison officer, SSA Lagos Affairs which has been taken over by Lisa and I am now SSA on public Affairs. And this happened 5 months ago, when there was a cabinet reshuffle. For my Fans who still love and believe in me, God will always be faithful. <br />
<h2 id="page_content_Content9_oModuleContent_2_h2_TitleAlt" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; margin: 0px 0px 0.5em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /><span style="line-height: 1.5em; text-align: justify;">Organisers of the maiden edition of the annual Light Up Awards scheduled to hold later this month have released the names of nominees for the awards.</span></span></h2>
<div class="body" id="page_content_Content9_oModuleContent_2_div_Body" style="background-color: white; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
The award, according to the national coordinator of Project Light-Up Nigeria, Mr. Frank Ukpabi,is designed to recognise, appreciate and encourage public office holders, corporate entities and private citizens who are contributing to a Nigeria of steady electricity power supply and well-lit up streets at night based on the age-long proven norm that encouragement leads to more achievement.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
“On the other hand, our country being the most populous nation in Africa makes it a prime low-cost source destination and a serious competition for China, only if we have steady electricity power supply hence this initiative to encourage the electricity power efforts of the three tiers of government in a somewhat competitive environment,” Ukpabi also said at a recent media briefing in Lagos.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
Nigerians now have the opportunity to vote for either President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the president that generated the highest number of electricity megawatts between 1979 and 2012. In the same vein, they will be voting for the Governor with the highest number of streetlight projects 2012 with Governors Babatunde Fashola, Rabiu Kwakwanso, Sullivan Chime and Sule Lamido already nominated for the award. This is coming as Nigerians have to choose from Governors Liyel Imoke, Babatunde Fashola and Rotimi Amaechi as the Governor with the best rural electrification project 2012.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
To vote for winners , Ukpabi urged Nigerians to view the nominees’ various power projects on the organisation’s website and vote accordingly by sending the name of the nominee and category of the award to info@projectlightupnigeria.com or by sms to 07061286603.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Explaining how the nominations were made, the national coordinator stated: “In our bid to achieve this and in a transparent manner we set up our website www.projectlightupnigeria.com to showcase pictures and details of all electricity power projects executed by participants for appraisal by Nigerians.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
“The website has pages for Mr. President, the 36 States Governors, the FCT Minister and 150 corporate firms. We therefore visited the Federal Government, the 36 States and 150 corporate firms with requests for pictures and details of all electrical power projects executed by them. And for the corporate firms, we requested streets lit up them as part of their corporate social responsibility to enable us upload such on their various pages on our website for Nigerians to compare and contrast and nominate accordingly.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
“Eventually, 11 States, a Local Government and five corporate firms who have electricity power projects they are proud of submitted pictures and details of such in response to our request. We also received information on how many megawatts of electricity were generated by all Nigerian Presidents between 1979 and 2012.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
“This information is currently on our website. We went ahead to print a magazine named LIGHT UP Magazine with these details to complement the efforts of our website in guiding Nigerians as they send in their nominations for the various award categories.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
According to Ukpabi, states that submitted their power projects are Lagos, Cross River, Rivers , Enugu , Ebonyi, Ondo, Kano, Oyo, Osun, Edo and Jigawa. He also disclosed that companies which submitted list of streets lit up by them include Zenith Bank, Promasidor, Emel Group, Dufil Prima and Flourmills Plc as he listed the Local Government which submitted its power project as Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
According to Ukpabi, “Nigerians sent in their nominations and at the close of nominations, the following nominees emerged for the first category: Companies with the highest number of streetlight projects as part of their corporate social responsibilities are Zenith Bank and Flour Mills. Company with the best maintained streetlight project are Zenith Bank, Dufil Prima (Indomie) and Promasidor.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
He also listed companies with corporate social responsibility projects of the year on streetlight as Zenith Bank and Dufil Prima.</div>

<br />
Four teenage girls, <b>Duro-Aina Adebola</b> (14), <b>Akindele Abiola</b> (14), <b>Faleke Oluwatoyin</b> (14) and <b>Bello Eniola</b> (15) have stunned the country with their invention of a urine powered generator at this year’s <b>Maker Faire Africa</b>, an event which shows off innovations, inventions, and initiatives that solve immediate challenges and problems, and then works to support and propagate them.<br />
<br />
How it works:<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1756849625939350007" name="more"></a><br />
<ul style="line-height: 1.4; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em; text-align: justify;">
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which cracks the urea into nitrogen, water, and hydrogen.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">1 Liter of urine gives you 6 hours of electricity</li>
</ul>

<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">As infighting rages among members</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; font-size: 14px;">THE alleged offer of peaceful resolution of Boko Haram terrorism in Nigeria has caused a major break-up of the fundamental Islamic sect even as the group tries to replace former Head of State, General Mohammed Buhari with a prominent Muslim leader Dr. Datti Ahmed who sources said is the real leader of Boko Haram.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
It would be recalled that Boko Haram in a statement by one Abu Mohammed IbuAbdullaziz who claimed to be speaking on behalf of his self-acclaimed leader, Sheik Abubakar Shekau said Boko Haram was now ready to give peace a chance in Nigeria and requested that federal government negotiate with its allegedly appointed representative, General Mohammadu Buhari.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Abdulaziz said he had the mandate of Shekau to request the federal government to send its negotiation team who will now met a team to lead by Buhari. Other members of the Boko Haram team include, former governor of Yobe State now Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, first Nigerian Petroleum Minister Shettima Ali Mungono, chairman of the Presidential Committee on insecurity in the North-East, Ambassador Gaji Gatimari and other prominent members of the Borno Emirate to negotiate with federal government on the group's behalf.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
However while some Nigerians were still contemplating the viability of the offer because of the untended previous offers, Buhari almost instantly denied being approached to lead any Boko Haram peace initiative and inferred that the whole talk about negotiation with federal government was a political gimmick spurned by members of the Jonathan administration. The Buhari camp even alleged that the former Head of State's name was being bandied as Boko Haram's representative in order to create a basis for possible treason charges against him.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
According to a statement by the national secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Engr. Buba Galadima, Buhari even claimed not to have heard about his alleged appointment by Boko Haram.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
“He said the whole thing to him is just speculative and that since nobody has contacted him as a person for him to even know who is behind what, and what the motives of the whole exercise are, he would not speak to the press. Buhari said as an elder statesman and presidential candidate of CPC in 2011, he remains prayerful so that peace and tranquility can return to Nigeria,” Galadima said.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
In a statement to further buttress the fear among his associates that he was probably being set up for arrest and treasonable trial, Rotimi Fashekun, CPC national publicity secretary lampooned President Goodluck Jonathan and PDP over the so called nomination of Buhari to hold Boko Haram peace talks.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Fashekun said Buhari's alleged nomination, “is the latest gambit in the desire of this organically corrupt PDP led federal government in diverting the attention of the unsuspecting Nigerian public from the on-going massive of their common patrimony without any scintilla of equivocation, General Muhammadu Buhari has never directly or remotely connected with any insurrection or insurgency against the Nigerian nation and her people.”</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Fashekun accused PDP of being responsible for the growing insecurity in the country.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Break-up</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Meanwhile National Daily competent sources have disclosed that Boko Haram may have split into three factions as a result of fatigue, family pressures, and decline in donation from local and foreign sponsors, tireless anti-terrorism efforts of the Joint Task Force (JTF), disagreement between the original Boko Haram led by Late Ultaiz Mohammed Yusuf and new entrance. Sources also linked the Boko Haram internal feud to the bursting of the group's training camp in Niger Republic following a recent visit to that country by the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd) and persistent power struggle over who is really the authentic leader of the group, Mohammed Yusuf's successor.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
National Daily learned that the three groups that are now allegedly claiming to be the authentic Boko Haram include the original Yusuf followers, the economic Boko Haram (said to be interested in the acquisition of dubious wealth) and the political Boko Haram said consist of mostly politicians who are using the Boko Haram platform to further their political interest.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
President Goodluck Jonathan recently alerted the nation about his concern that Boko Haram Islamic fundamentalist group may have infiltrated his administration. The president's concern about the involvement of politicians in Boko Haram was seemingly amplified by the former NSA, General Andrew Azazi.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Furthermore, the State Security Service (SSS), recently affirmed the complicity of the top echelon of the PDP leadership in Boko Haram activities saying that such occurrence threatens our nationhood.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
The Boko Haram group is currently facing some serious crisis and is no longer as cohesive as before. The group has been seriously weakened and actually be looking for a credible way to surrender. Not all of the group leaders are happy with the statement linking Buhari with the so called peace talks.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
This set of people believes that it is not an intelligent move because Buhari is still a politician aspiring for public office. They frowned that they were not contacted before such statement was issued. Some of Boko Haram's field Agents, that is, those who carry out their operations are showing serious signs of tiredness. They complain of pressures from family members and possibility of being crushed by the JTF. Some Boko Haram members are complaining bitterly of hunger as a result of lack of consistent funds and their inability to become gainfully employed for security reasons. The issue that nearly led to their killing each other, is the issue of who among those parading themselves is the real leader of Boko Haram.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Real Boko Haram</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Many members of the original Boko Harm do not recognize Mallam Abubakar Shekau as their leader rather they claim that their leader is Dr. Ahmed Datti, a University of Ibadan trained physician who was once a presidential aspirant. This people said only Ahmed can negotiate on their behalf,” our source said.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
This surprise claim seems to have been justified by the role of Dr. Ahmed on issues concerning Boko Haram and its relationship with the public. Dr. Ahmed is also said to be a very close friend of late Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf and was said to have been so pained by his killing that he almost wept. Ahmed is the president of the president of Supreme Council for Sharia, a group Boko Haram's founder, Yusuf was a prominent member before he was killed.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
When President Jonathan said some time ago that the government was open to dialogue with Boko Haram but said the sect members were hidden and therefore direct talks was unlikely, our sources said, it was Dr. Ahmed who volunteered to fish out Boko Haram members and negotiate on their behalf.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
“Dr. Ahmed was the one carrying messages back and forth between the federal government and Boko Haram,” one source said.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Ahmed himself was alleged to have said in those days that he and a colleague had met with Nigerian government officials at the highest level on March 5, 2011. We contacted the leadership of the sect and established from them that they were prepared to consider 'Sulhu' which means broad reconciliation “regarding the feud between them and the government.”</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
However, sources said that Dr. Ahmed decided to pull out of the negotiation because of media leakages. Dr. Ahmed is known by Muslims in Nigeria as the defender of the faith. He once said that he can go to any extent to defend Islam.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Ahmad also comes from the Genawa clan in Kano, noted that the clan has produced several other distinguished men like the late Malam Aminu Kano, the late Gen. Murtala Muhammed, First Republic Minister of Defence, Alhaji Inuwa Wada, and Justice Abubakar Bashir Wali, a foremost Kano lawyer, who was among the justices of the Supreme Court.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
According to Mohammed, a medical doctor like Ahmad, “Ahmad was born in Kano and grew up in an area close to the palace of the Emir of Kano. His education started at the Native Authority Elementary School, the Kano City Boarding Primary School, from where he proceeded to the prestigious Barewa College, the College of Arts and Science in Zaria, which was later converted to the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), where he took a degree in medicine (MBBS) from the University of London.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
“At the end of his stint as a House Officer, he was employed by the Northern Regional government and he worked in several parts of the North until he opened a clinic, Asmau Memorial Hospital, situated opposite Triumph Newspaper in Kano. He was later to transfer the ownership of the hospital to the Kano State government.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
“Typical of his clan and most intellectuals from Kano, Ahmad was involved in public service like the Kano Leaders of Thought group after the 1966 coup and the Kano Foundation during the Second Republic. Deeply religious, Ahmad has been linked with at least two mosques, one is sited near the Bayero University, Kano (BUK) and the other situated in the Kano GRA, is called the Sheikh Umar Bin Khattab Mosque.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Ahmad is a regular face at the popular AlFurqan Mosque situated at the Nasarawa GRA, often frequented by the intelligentsia, technocrats and businessmen in Kano. The Medina-trained Sheikh Bashir Ali holds sway in the Mosque, where at a point, special Al-Qunut prayers were offered for the restoration of peace in Kano, an indication that he is more predisposed to peace than war, as is widely peddled by his adversaries.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Truce</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
When members of the aggrieved Jama'atul AhlusSunna Lid Da'awatis Jihad Boko Haram said they were more comfortable with him as the man to be trusted to negotiate on their behalf with the Federal Government, many peace-loving Nigerians heaved a sigh of relief.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Most people are usually drawn to Sheikh Ahmad because of his boundless energy, focus and attraction as a thoroughbred Muslim. It is said that he wears his love for Islam like a badge and that he is the most likely person that would go out of his way to ensure that no harm came the way of Muslims, particularly the northern Muslims.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Being branded a fanatic is a tag he will not so much rebuff as long as it is all about maintaining the sanctity of Islam and protecting the Muslim brotherhood. The Sheikh, a man of modest means lives in a bungalow at the Magwan axis of Kano metropolis. Not given to the extravagance and opulence associated with some of his ilk, Ahmad gave out his hospital, now a Urology centre, to the Kano State government for an undisclosed fee during the tenure of Ibrahim Shekarau.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Ahmed is a respected and influential preacher. President of the Supreme Council of Sharia Law in Nigeria (SCSN), the body behind the introduction of Sharia law in some northern states, he is respected as a man who understands the true tenets of Islam.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Over the years, Ahmad has shown that he can go to any length to defend Islam. In August 2001, he said that the SCSN would seek reprisals against the killing of northerners in the South. And when in October 2001, hundreds of southern Christians were killed in Kano, by Muslim rioters, it was alleged that Ahmed inspired them.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
In 2002, in the wake of a Miss World pageant billed to hold in Abuja, a newspaper, in a bid to drum support for the pageant, made a comment that was deemed disrespectful to the Prophet Mohammed. Ahmad, alongside others, called on the Muslims Ummah to rise and defend the Islamic Faith.A bloody riot broke out thereafter in Kano and Kaduna; lives and properties were lost.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
The medical practitioner is one that never shies away from any fight aimed at protecting his Muslim brothers, no matter the controversy.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
In October 2003, the governors of Kano, Kaduna and Zamfara states ordered the stoppage of the polio immunisation pending when the vaccines were investigated and proven to be safe. The decision by the governors was predicated by well-grounded suspicions and rumours that the vaccine, which was rejected in the North, was contaminated and had become a tool to pursue the depopulation of Muslims in the three states, where the poliovirus was widespread then.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
As the leader of the influential supreme council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN), Sheikh Ahmad, felt like all other concerned Muslims that there could be some truth in the claim as they ensured that Muslim faithful avoided the vaccine until there were contrary claims.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
The Sheikh, who carved a niche for himself as a top physician from the Ibadan University, may have taken such position bearing in mind the fiasco from the trial of a new meningitis drug by US pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer in Kano in 1996, which ended up doing more harm than good for dozens of children that were administered with the drug.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Still in 2003, Ahmad said: “The council (SCSN) harboured strong reservations on the safety of our population not least because of our recent experience in the Pfizer scandal, when our people were used as guinea pigs with the approval of the Federal Ministry of Health and that of all the relevant United Nation agencies.”</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
His claims led to the suspension of the polio campaign. Other Muslim clerics elsewhere like in India and Pakistan followed Ahmad's lead.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
It is difficult to say that Sheikh Ahmad doesn't care for the interest of his Muslim brothers because he is dedicated to making their lives better. At the height of the debate over the necessity of Jaiz Islamic Bank in the polity, it was not necessarily the arguments of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi that settled matters for the bank. The matter was settled when Sheikh Ahmad threatened that Muslims were ready to go to war if anybody stood on the way of the proposed non-interest banking. Since then, the voices of the opposition to the non-interest banking have faded.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Influence</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Politics is a gray area for Ahmad because “many people don't associate him easily with the pursuit of elective political office considering his involvement in Islamic religious activities.”</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
But Mohammed a Second Republic lawmaker said: “Ideologically, he never belonged to the same party as his cousin, the late Aminu Kano, who founded the defunct Peoples Redemption Party (PRP). So it is safer to categorise him as a right or centre traditionalist, ideologically speaking.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
“Like many members of his generation like the late Sunday Awoniyi, Adamu Ciroma, Comrade Uche Chukwumerije, who were in the University of Ibadan, Ahmad was and is still deeply interested in politics.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
“Ahmad was a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee set up by the Late Gen. Murtala Mohammed and also a member of the Constituent Assembly under Sir Udo Udoma. He left the Constituent Assembly as a result of the controversial judgment of the election in the constituency that produced him Rano/Kura constituency in present day Kano.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
“He was in the national movement that later metamorphosed into the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and one of the leading presidential aspirants of the party along with Alhaji Shehu Shagari, and Yusuf Maitama Sule.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
“At a point, Ahmad was touted as the possible successor of Obasanjo/Yar'Adua regime in 1979, but along the line, he fell out with the then Head of State, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo. Also, the military establishment and their apologists from the North felt he was too independent minded and could not be trusted. That was why they gave the presidency to Shagari in 1979.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Perhaps there is something to say about his independence and opinion and his ability to generate controversy. According to Mohammed, “Datti Ahmad also disagreed with most of his friends, who had attended Barewa College and who later became members of the infamous group known as the Kaduna Mafia, even though from all indications, he had nothing to do with the group.”</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Ahmad courted controversy when in 2004 after the Nigerian “Taliban” under the leadership of Aminu Tashen-Ilimi killed policemen in their insurgency, Ahmad said of them: “These are very sophisticated youth. They are not just the trash. I can understand why they did it. I'm not in a position to say whether I support it or not, but they must have their reasons.”</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
To date, Ahmad still leads the Supreme Council of Sharia Law and many allege that he appears to tacitly support acts of terrorism carried out by Islamists.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
The dialogue with Boko Haram has stirred the kind of controversy that has dogged Datti Ahmad's paths. In an interview with The Guardian, the Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity) Dr. Reuben Abati said that even the spokespersons of the Boko Haram have admitted, that the group has mutated. “So it is not unusual that you will find a situation whereby a variant of the mutation may express a view that sounds like it's contradicting the other,” he added.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
This observation prevailed as some members of the group denied any dialogue with government through Ahmad and that they even didn't know him. Meanwhile another group, probably the leadership of the “real Boko Haram,” confirmed a dialogue with the Federal Government.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Ahmad had on behalf of the SCSN proposed to President Jonathan to work out a confidential initiative for the Federal Government to dialogue with Boko Haram. The President's Principal Private Secretary, Ambassador Hassan Tukur was ordered to coordinate Ahmad's group, but the latter soon claimed that Tukur sabotaged the confidentiality of the process. The Ambassador denied the allegation.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Soon after, the Sheikh, unhappy with government officials, who failed to keep their own part of the bargain, stormed out of the deal. However, Sheikh Ahmad, who is known to be a man of few words might, with the renewed effort by the Northern Governors' Forum (NGF), can still be the man to broker peace between the Federal Government and members of the Boko Haram.<br />

The Federal Government is ready for dialogue with Boko Haram but on one condition that the Spiritual and Political Leader of the sect, Imam Abubakar Shekau, will be at the negotiation table.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
It was also learnt that the government may come up with an Amnesty Programme for members of the sect after ceasefire and disarmament if they are sincere.</div>
<a href="" name="more"></a><br /><div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
A government source, who spoke in strict confidence, said the conditions set by the group would be resolved during the dialogue.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The source said: “We were not surprised by the offer of the dialogue because there had been contacts between the sect and National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki in the last few months.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“As a matter of fact, the NSA had some talks with the leaders of the sect last week where it was indicated that Shekau’s deputy might lead Boko Haram delegation to the dialogue.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“The NSA however said the government would want Shekau to head the team from the sect’s side in order to give the proposed talks more weight.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“With Shekau, who is the spiritual and political leader of Boko Haram, there will be a meaningful direction for the discussion by the two parties.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“If it works out and if Boko Haram is sincere with the dialogue option, the government will embrace it.”</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Responding to a question, the source added: “Once we can find common grounds, the government will come up with a rehabilitation initiative which is similar to the ongoing Amnesty Programme.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“Even in the case of the affected parts of the North, there might be a joint reconstruction programme between the Federal Government and the ravaged states.”</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Concerning the demand of Boko Haram for the arrest of ex-Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, the source added: “That is a political side of their demands which the government will look into.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“From security reports and investigation by agencies, some members of the sect gave Sheriff support during his election based on three demands.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“The demands were a creation of a Ministry for Islamic (Religious Affairs), being part of Sheriff’s government and the implementation of Sharia in Borno State.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“They parted ways with Sheriff when he refused to implement the Sharia policy. The situation worsened following the brutal killing of the leader of the sect, Mohammed Yusuf and a former Commissioner for Islamic (Religious) Affairs in Sheriff’s cabinet.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“The dialogue will shape discussions on the fate of Sheriff.”</div>

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has ordered the immediate closure of nudity clubs in the state, describing their existence as “strange and devilish”. Okorocha, who gave the order in Owerri on Wednesday at the end of the meeting of the state Security Council, said that the operation of nudity clubs debased Igbo culture.<br /><br />He said that such clubs had compounded the eroding morality of the youths and warned that the government would no longer condone their destructive activities. <div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor Nsima Ekere quit his job yesterday – “for personal reasons.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
His terse letter of resignation sent to Governor Godswill Akpabio reads: “Pursuant to Section 306 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), I kindly notify you of my resignation from the Office of the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State forthwith on personal grounds.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“I want to thank you immensely for the opportunity to serve Akwa Ibom State and the good people of the state as well in the remaining years of your administration.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
A statement signed by Ekere’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Inemesit Ina, confirmed the resignation, but refused to go beyond the lines in the letter.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Reports from the state indicated that senior government officials discussed the development in hushed tones as the news filtered through in the course of the day.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Attempts to speak with the governor’s media aides failed, but sources indicated that preparations for succession to Akpabio had caused a split in the government. Ekere, 47, who hails from Ikot Abasi in Eket Local Government is said to be interested in taking over the reins of government in 2015, while the Secretary to the State Government, Umana Okon Umana, who hails from Uyo Senatorial District, is also reported to be insistent on taking over the Uyo Government House.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Both men are believed to enjoy wide support in their respective spheres of influence, and had looked forward to obtaining the governor’s support.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
A high official of the government said yesterday, “it has been a difficult decision for the governor to take. On the one hand, he largely owes his victory at the poll in 2007 to Umana. As Finance Commissioner in the Victor Attah administration, Umana stuck out his neck, supported the governor morally and financially and galvanized votes for him in the very crucial Uyo district.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“He thereafter emerged the SSG and has remained a major pillar of the government. He had left no one in doubt that he had his eyes on occupying the seat at the expiration of Akpabio’s tenure. Again, in 2011, in the face of very stiff challenge from Senator John Akpanudoedehe who crossed to the Action Congress of Nigeria to pick up the ticket, the task of mobilising support for the PDP in the Uyo district fell on Umana. He performed creditably.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“On the other hand, Ekere has been a very loyal deputy. He served creditably and proved his worth in the government. His people in the Eket district believe that it is their turn to produce the governor. In the 1999-2007 period, Victor Attah, from Uyo, was the governor. Since then Akpabio, from Ikot Ekpene district, has been in the saddle. It is therefore believed that, in the interest of justice and equity, it should go to the Eket zone.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“This is the crux of the matter. The resignation has further complicated matters, coming so soon after the 2011 election.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Ekere was one of the 47 aspirants who indicated interest in succeeding Governor Attah in 2007. He stepped down in support of the governor and thus boosted his political standing. He was thus tipped as the running mate, but, on the intervention of party elders, shelved his ambition.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
He was replaced by Patrick Ekpotu, a loyalist of Governor Attah, in a bid for reconciliation ahead of the 2007 election. But, Ekpotu was dropped last year and replaced by Ekere, in what was described as a reward for loyalty.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Resignations by deputy governors are not new in the Akwa Ibom political scene. On June 23, 2005 , Chris Ekpeyong was impeached by the state House of Assembly, apparently at the behest of Governor Attah. However, the intervention by the national leadership of the PDP saw the House reverse the removal. He consequently resigned on July 5. He was replaced by Michael Udofia.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #5e6066; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In October 2010, there was heavy speculation that Ekpotu had resigned. This was later denied and the deputy governor was allowed to serve out the term.</div>

<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Williams, a retired chartered accountant, is married to two ladies, one of whom reportedly runs a company that produces toiletries.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">It was gathered that the relationship between the Williams’ family and Onyeka’s elder sister and brother dates back to a few years ago as all of them were worshipping at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Ogudu.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Onyeka’s elder sister, Mrs. Angela Moses, who lost her husband a few years ago, was said to be close to Tunde Williams’ first wife, who happens to be of Igbo extraction while the second wife is Yoruba.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The Igbo wife, according to investigations, lives in the same Ogudu residence with her husband while the Yoruba wife resides in one of their buildings elsewhere.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The deceased, who completed his secondary school education in Warri, Delta State had come to live with his sister, one Mrs. Moses, after the death of her husband and as he searched endlessly for job, an opportunity came for him to work with the Williams pending when he would secure admission to higher institution as he was said to be brilliant.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Though, there is no autopsy report yet, but Onyeka’s family members strongly suspect that his death must have been master-minded by some unseen hands given the manner his boss, Williams, allegedly conducted himself when members of the deceased family rushed to the scene as soon as information got to them about the ugly incident.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">It was gathered that when Mrs. Moses and her other relations got to Williams’ residence where the incident occurred, some policemen were already there and asked some questions from the security man who was reportedly at home when the incident occurred.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">According to investigation, two men were said to have come in a vehicle to see Williams that same day but were told he was not at home and the men reportedly insisted on going into his office as they were there to do some assignment.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The two men allegedly went in and left after some minutes before the security man discovered that Onyeka was dead in the swimming pool.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">While the first wife was said to have travelled outside the country, the second who lives elsewhere, came visiting soon after the incident.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">According to sources, efforts of the police to question the security man more about what he knew were frustrated by Williams who was not happy that police men were asking many questions.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Sources at the scene revealed that Williams’ attitude did not give any feeling about the young man’s death as he allegedly brooded over some amount of money, about N50,000 he was said to have given to the deceased to pay for an unknown examination.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Onyeka’s family sources however denied knowledge of any N50,000 given to him and for what examination.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">They recalled that last month, there was a misunderstanding between Onyeka and his boss, which almost necessitated the termination of his appointment.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">He was said to have opted to leave the job for certain undisclosed reasons, but his elder sister had prevailed on him to endure the situation, as there was nothing for him to do at present.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The Guardian learnt that Williams was virtually angry with the DPO when he insisted that autopsy should be carried out on the deceased. Because the DPO insisted on following the due process and ensuring justice in the matter, Williams was said to be unhappy with him and refused to provide the money for the autopsy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Lagos State Police spokesman, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of police (DSP) who confirmed the incident said it was ‘a case of suspected murder’.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">According to Braide, “A case of suspected murder was reported that one Onyeka, a steward to one Mr. Tunde Williams died in a swimming pool in a mysterious circumstance. The owner of the house, where his body was found is not cooperating with the police. The case will be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos.”</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"></span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">President Goodluck Jonathan has declared that the popular and democratic electoral mandate given him by Nigerians saved his job during the subsidy removal protests in the country early this year.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 20.4pt; margin: 0in 0in 13.2pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The President was speaking in Freetown, Sierra Leone when he met with chairman of the country's National Electoral Commission (NEC), Madam Christina Thorpe, as well as chairmen and some presidential candidates of political parties contesting in the Sierra Leone's general elections coming up on November 17 this year.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 20.4pt; margin: 0in 0in 13.2pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Jonathan spoke in line with his admonition to the political class, to jointly ensure free and fair polls as such this guarantee their popularity with the electorate and the ability to gain the people's confidence when taking take strong decisions in tumultuous times.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 20.4pt; margin: 0in 0in 13.2pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">According to the President, the crises that engulfed Nigeria when he attempted to remove petroleum subsidy last January would have seen him removed from office if not that the majority of citizens who voted for him refused to be coerced or deceived into demanding for a regime change instead of reversal of the policy.</span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 20.4pt; margin: 0in 0in 13.2pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">"In Nigeria, I remember the fuel subsidy crisis all over the country, I could have been removed but I was confident of my mandate. When some people started talking of regime change, majority of the people who voted for me insisted that they elected me and what they are asking for is change of policy, not regime change; and that calmed down the situation.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 20.4pt; margin: 0in 0in 13.2pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">"Credible elections give you the mandate of the people and confidence too. It is difficult to calm people down when elections are manipulated", he said.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 20.4pt; margin: 0in 0in 13.2pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Lecturing his audience on the need for credible polls, President Jonathan enthused that he would not be in Sierra Leone to preach free and fair polls if he had not successfully done same in Nigeria. According to him "If we had manipulated elections in Nigeria, I would not have had the courage to come and confront you. If I had manipulated myself into office, there is no way I would come and sell to you what I do not have".<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 20.4pt; margin: 0in 0in 13.2pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">He tasked Sierra Leone's ruling party, the All Peoples Congress (APC) to ensure a level playing field that will bring about acceptable elections as the party stands to reap immensely in terms of credibility from such action. Ruling simply by might is primitive and does not ensure stable polity, stressed Jonathan who pledged more of Nigeria's assistance towards successful elections in Sierra Leone.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 20.4pt; margin: 0in 0in 13.2pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Nigeria had earlier donated 25 operational vehicles and $1 million to Sierra Leone, and trained some of their electoral officials in Nigeria towards the conduct of the polls. Many of the political parties' chieftains requested for more assistance from Nigeria, including providing subventions to the parties to enable them withstand the financial might of the bigger parties.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 20.4pt; margin: 0in 0in 13.2pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Jonathan was also formally bestowed with that country's highest national honour of Grand Commander of the Republic of Sierra Leone (GCRSL) awarded to him during Sierra Leone's 51st Independence Anniversary in April. He thanked the people of Sierra Leone for the honour and assured that Nigeria would continue to give as much assistance it could to them as the relationship between both countries grow stronger. The award, according to President Bai Koroma, was given to Jonathan in recognition of his and Nigeria's invaluable support for and timely intervention during difficult times in Sierra Leone.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 20.4pt; margin: 0in 0in 13.2pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">"We as a nation are very grateful. This is the crowning of our bilateral relations and your personal assistance to Sierra Leone", Koroma said.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">LAGOS lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), yesterday gave indication of a legal action against government if the five aides of Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State who were involved in plane crash with the governor are not flown abroad for medical treatment.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The aides were rescued alongside Suntai in the Cessna 208 aircraft that crashed on their way to Yola, Adamawa State.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">While the governor was immediately flown to the National Hospital, Abuja and subsequently to Germany for treatment, his aides were left at the hospital in Yola and later taken to the National Hospital, Abuja.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Meanwhile, the Rivers State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN) has described the $50 million used by Governor Rotimi Amaechi to buy the Global 5000 Bombardier Jet as money wasted.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Speaking at a media roundtable on “Promotion of Ethics and Integrity in the Courts System and Improving Citizens’ Access to Justice: The Role of Lawyers” in Lagos, Falana said the treatment given to the governor’s aides runs foul of Article 3 of the African Charter, which guarantees equal access to life and treatment to all.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Falana, who gave three days to the government to fly the aides abroad for treatment, said he and other civil societies would be left with no option but to approach the court to enforce the African Charter.</span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">According to him, the action of Suntai, by attending a pilot course while serving as a governor, is a dereliction of duty and constitutes an impeachable offence under Nigerian law.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">He also described as irresponsibility on the path of a governor of one of the flood-ravaged states in the South-South to spend $50 million to acquire a jet meant to facilitate his law school programme in the United Kingdom at the expense of the flood ravaged people of his state.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Falana, who said there is enough law and statute to tackle corruption in the country, called on the National Assembly to give autonomy to the anti-graft agencies so that they no longer report to the government. He also said the boards of the agencies should be peopled by representatives of credible organisations in Nigeria.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 13.5pt; margin: 11.25pt 0in; outline: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Also yesterday, lawyer and human rights activist, Bamidele Aturu, said the crash involving Governor Suntai raises a number of questions that we must not allow our sympathies to overshadow.</span></div>
