Organisers of the maiden edition of the annual Light Up Awards scheduled to hold later this month have released the names of nominees for the awards.

The award, according to the national coordinator of Project Light-Up Nigeria, Mr. Frank Ukpabi,is designed to recognise, appreciate and encourage public office holders, corporate entities and private citizens who are contributing to a Nigeria of steady electricity power supply and well-lit up streets at night based on the age-long proven norm that encouragement leads to more achievement.

“On the other hand, our country being the most populous nation in Africa makes it a prime low-cost source destination and a serious competition for China, only if we have steady electricity power supply hence this initiative to encourage the electricity power efforts of the three tiers of government in a somewhat competitive environment,” Ukpabi also said at a recent media briefing in Lagos.
Nigerians now have the opportunity to vote for  either President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the president that generated the highest number of electricity megawatts between 1979 and 2012. In the same vein, they will be voting for the Governor with the highest number of streetlight projects 2012 with  Governors Babatunde Fashola, Rabiu Kwakwanso, Sullivan Chime and  Sule Lamido already nominated for the award. This is coming as Nigerians have to choose from Governors Liyel Imoke, Babatunde Fashola and Rotimi Amaechi as the  Governor with the best rural electrification project 2012.
To vote for winners , Ukpabi  urged  Nigerians to view the nominees’ various power projects on the organisation’s website and vote accordingly by sending the name of the nominee and category of the award to info@projectlightupnigeria.com or by sms to 07061286603.
Explaining how the nominations were made, the national coordinator stated:  “In our bid to achieve this and in a transparent manner we set up our website www.projectlightupnigeria.com  to showcase pictures and details of all electricity power projects executed by participants for appraisal by Nigerians.
“The website has pages for Mr. President, the 36 States Governors, the FCT Minister and 150 corporate firms. We therefore visited the Federal Government, the 36 States and 150 corporate firms with requests for pictures and details of  all electrical power projects executed by them. And for the corporate firms, we requested streets lit up them as part of their corporate social responsibility to enable us upload such on their various pages on our website for Nigerians to compare and contrast and nominate accordingly.
“Eventually, 11 States, a Local Government and five corporate firms who have electricity power projects they are proud of submitted pictures and details of such in response to our request. We also received information on how many megawatts of electricity were generated by all Nigerian Presidents between 1979 and 2012.
“This information is currently on our website. We went ahead to print a magazine named LIGHT UP Magazine with these details to complement the efforts of our website in guiding Nigerians as they send in their nominations for the various award categories.”
According to Ukpabi, states that submitted their power projects are Lagos, Cross River, Rivers , Enugu , Ebonyi, Ondo,  Kano, Oyo, Osun, Edo and  Jigawa. He also disclosed that companies which submitted list of streets lit up by them include Zenith Bank,  Promasidor, Emel Group, Dufil Prima and  Flourmills Plc as he listed the Local Government which submitted its power project as Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State.
According to Ukpabi, “Nigerians sent in their nominations and at the close of nominations, the following nominees emerged for the first category: Companies with the highest number of streetlight projects as part of their corporate social responsibilities are Zenith Bank and Flour Mills. Company with the best maintained streetlight project are Zenith Bank, Dufil Prima (Indomie) and Promasidor.”
He also listed companies with corporate social responsibility projects of the year on streetlight as Zenith Bank and Dufil Prima.
